How We Designed the Financial Command Centre
The Financial Command Centre is the main dashboard in FIQ Personal. It is the first thing you see when you open the app, and it is designed to answer the question most people have when they check their finances: where do I stand right now? The challenge was showing enough information to be genuinely useful without overwhelming people who just want a quick check-in.
We went through over a dozen design iterations. Early versions tried to show everything: budget status, net worth, debt progress, goals, recent transactions, and upcoming bills all on one screen. User testing showed that this created cognitive overload. People could not find what they needed because there was too much competing for attention. The solution was a layered approach: a clean summary at the top with key numbers, expandable sections for each financial area, and a customisable layout that lets power users rearrange modules to suit their priorities.
On the engineering side, the Command Centre presented interesting performance challenges. It aggregates data from multiple sources: bank feeds, manual entries, budget calculations, goal projections, and debt amortisation schedules. All of this needs to load quickly and feel responsive. We invested heavily in background data processing and intelligent caching so that the dashboard feels instant even when the underlying calculations are complex.
